Why is wearing a baby hat so important for baby's first few weeks?

A baby's head is especially sensitive to cold, and because it is proportionally larger than the rest of the body, a significant amount of body heat can be lost through it. Therefore, a warm and well-fitting hat is essential for babies - in all seasons.

Does my newborn baby also need a hat indoors?

Newborn babies are not yet able to regulate their body temperature very well during the first few weeks of their life. For this reason, it could be helpful for them to wear a thin baby bonnet indoors. A thin, well-fitting hat helps them to keep a stable body temperature. If your knitting a little newborn hat yourself, choose a small needle size and soft, natural yarn such as merino wool, organic cotton or a cotton - wool blend. Due to the natural temperature-regulating properties, wool ensures that your baby feels comfortable without causing overheating or sweating.

How do I measure my baby's head circumference correctly?

To find the right size for your baby bonnet, you first need the head circumference. Place a measuring tape horizontally around the head, just above the ears and eyebrows. Alternatively, you can use a piece of string and then measure it with a ruler. The measurement you get roughly corresponds to the baby hat size you will need. However, since knitted hats tend to stretch slightly or widens after the first wash, it's best to choose one size smaller in the knitting pattern for a snug fit.

Can I knit a baby hat as a beginner?

Definitely! My easy knitting patterns are mainly designed using simple knit and purl stitches on circular needles or classic straight needles - no dpns needed. That makes them perfect for beginners - so even simple baby bonnets are easy to knit. All my baby hat patterns are available starting from the smallest size for premature babies (preemies).
