What kind of yarn is best for knitting children’s hats?

Children’s hats are best knitted from a soft, non-itchy yarn. Merino wool, with its exceptionally fine fibers, is especially soft and ideal for children’s sensitive skin. Alpaca - or, for an extra touch of softness, cashmere - are also wonderfully gentle choices for little heads. For children with allergies, however, it's recommended to knit with 100% organic cotton, as it can be washed at higher temperatures.

Finding the right hat size - so your knitted children’s hat fits perfectly

Before you start knitting a hat, you’ll need your child’s head circumference. It’s best measured across the forehead and around the back of the head, without pulling the tape too tightly. To ensure a good fit, the finished hat should have a circumference that is about 10% smaller than the measured head circumference. For a circumference of approx. 18.89 inch, calculate:

18.89 in – (1.89 in ≈ 2 in) = 16.89 in

In the knitting pattern, you should therefore use 17 inch. Many patterns - including mine - combine several sizes. If, for example, size 17 inch is the largest size listed, it's best to choose the next larger size to ensure a comfortable fit.
